How to ask for Google reviews without feeling awkward

Your customers are happy, but hardly anyone leaves a review unless you ask. Here's how to ask in a minute, without pressure and within Google's rules.

You do a good job, the customer leaves happy… and doesn’t leave a review. It’s not that they don’t want to. They forget, or they don’t know where to do it. And when someone looks your business up on Google, reviews are one of the first things they read.

From your Google Business Profile you can create a link or QR code that goes straight to the review box. Google explains it on its page of tips to get more reviews. With that link, the customer doesn’t have to search for you: one tap and they can write.

Ask at the right moment

The best moment is right after the job, when the customer is happy. Three easy ways:

  • In person: “If you’re happy with it, a Google review would really help me. I’ll send you the link.”
  • On WhatsApp, the same day: a short message with the link.
  • With the QR code on the counter or on the invoice.

An example message:

Hi Anna, thanks for coming in today. If you liked the work, it would help us a lot if you left us a Google review: [link]. Have a great day!

What Google doesn’t allow

Google forbids offering anything in exchange for a review, such as a discount or a free product. It treats it as fake engagement. So always ask without gifts, and ask all your customers the same way.

Reply to your reviews

Replying to reviews, good and bad, shows there’s a real person behind the business. For good ones, a short thank you. For bad ones, stay calm: acknowledge the problem and offer a solution. Anyone reading your profile will see how you treat people.

Make it automatic

If it’s hard to remember, it can be automated: after every job, the customer automatically gets a message with the link. It’s one of the first things I set up in the urgent phase of the plan.
